Renowned for its beautiful landscapes, diverse wildlife and unique architectural character, Texas Hill Country is a 31,000 square mile area northwest of San Antonio that is often considered the gateway from the American Southwest to the true south – and has become a magnet for affluent residents looking to soak up the unique lifestyle it has to offer.
With its remote location and rugged limestone mountains, the region is known for its rich German and Spanish heritage, which was infused into its vernacular architecture over generations of exploration, agriculture and prospecting, and persists to this day in the Hill Country’s charming towns and villages.
Luxury living near Boerne
Close to the German settler town of Boerne is Cordillera Ranch - an exclusive gated community perched on the edge of a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and boasting an array of single-storey homes designed by architect Gustavo Arredondo.
Here, residents enjoy a laid-back lifestyle of open plan and outdoor living, making the most of the private river park on the edge of the winding Guadelupe with its abundant wildlife and leisure activities, with an array of amenities making the development feel like a town in its own right.
Cordillera Ranch showcases a diverse range of architectural styles, from classic Hill Country homes built with reclaimed materials to modern designs and elegant Mediterranean villas. Many of these stunning residences were crafted by renowned builder Todd Glowka, offering a unique blend of old-world charm and contemporary luxury.
Home on the fairway
Situated overlooking the acclaimed 16th hole of the golf course is one of these ‘Transitional Hill Country’ homes, set on a 1.34 acre site and constructed with a mix of classic materials including Texas limestone, oak and hand-troweled stucco, alongside contemporary ones like exposed steel framing and custom windows.
Boasting 7,129sqft of living space, the property features a double-height great room with exposed steel i-beams, twin fireplaces and a fully glazed aspect featuring wood clad windows and sliding doors that offer stunning views over the garden, pool area and golf course beyond.
There are four generous bedrooms, four and one half bathrooms, a vast kitchen with professional -grade appliances, a private study, craft room and a three-car garage, all connected by a series of wide, bright passageways.
The warmth of natural oak
Bathed in natural light, the property’s monochromatic color palette gives it an unapologetically modern identity, punctuated by statement light fittings and bold modern art, and softened by the addition of luxurious oak floors.
WoodCo’s Concan plank – an engineered, character-grade floor manufactured from European oak – was used throughout this home, with extra-long planks in a creamy custom finish providing the perfect bridge between the rustic and the modern, grounding the property in the natural world that forms so much of its innate appeal.
Harvested from forests in France and Germany, Concan has its own subtle connection to the Hill Country and oozes character, with a rich grain pattern delivering warmth and interest at every turn. Bonded to a birch plywood base, it offers unrivalled dimensional stability that’s ideal for the humid Texan climate and for use in high-traffic areas of this home, including the vast kitchen-diner that opens onto the terrace and is simply made for entertaining.
On the terrace itself – tiled for poolside practicality – the effect is further enhanced by the addition of pine ceiling cladding that provides much-needed insulation from the hot Texas sun while infusing the outdoor space with rustic charm, contributing to a stunning space that encapsulates the many benefits of life at Cordillera Ranch.
