Timeless beauty in white oak at Turnberry Manor, Texas

Tucked away on a secluded, rural site close to San Antonio, Texas, the Turnberry Manor is a property indelibly shaped by nature; from the wooded location that envelops the house, to the very materials used to construct and furnish this grand yet welcoming home.

Designed by Texas architects Michael G. Imber, Turnberry’s architectural influences are patently European, from the English country manor style of the principal living spaces to the octagonal library, inspired by the design of a French dovecote with an elaborate vaulted ceiling and heavily paneled walls.

Classic Texan vernacular

While its influences originate across the pond, their expression at Turnberry Manor is quintessentially Texan, with vernacular materials including Texas limestone, red clay tile and white oak infusing the property with a rustic air that grounds it in the landscape.

The aesthetic at Turnberry is unapologetically timeless. Bare plaster walls and cut stone wainscoting combine with white oak beams and rift and quartered white oak paneling throughout the home, while heavy iron chandeliers evoke past times.

Timeless, restful style

So as not to detract from the natural beauty of these materials, the property has been delicately furnished using classically-shaped pieces and neutral fabrics rich in texture, creating a soft and restful feel that is further enhanced by the ebb and flow between indoor spaces and a series of secluded outdoor pavilions for relaxing or entertaining.

We were honored to work on this heritage-grade project by providing the reclaimed white oak beams that are so integral to the design of its vaulted ceilings, as well as a mix of red and white character grade rift and quartered white oak for the wainscoting which has been exquisitely finished on site in a classic mock-Tudor style.
